Moray & Agnew appoints Property Head in Melbourne

Media Release

Moray & Agnew is delighted to announce the appointment of leading Victorian property lawyer Michael Markowitz to head its property practice in Melbourne.

Michael joins from boutique property firm Rigby Cooke, where he was a partner for 20 years.

With qualifications in both law and town planning, Michael has over 30 years’ property experience. His expertise spans implementation and development of large complex projects across a range of industries, in particular the alpine and water sectors. Michael has been instrumental in many landmark property developments at Victoria’s ski resorts including Mount Buller, Mount Baw Baw, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek.

As principal adviser to the Board of Mount Baw Baw Alpine Resort, Michael was involved in the preparation of an early public private partnership for the provision of electricity power generation within the resort. He advised the Victorian Minister for Sustainability and Environment on appointments to alpine boards of management.

Within the water industry, Michael is actively involved in the development of water supply and transport agreements for rural agribusiness, and water re-use and conservation projects such as the waste water recycling project at Mount Hotham.

Michael also acts for developers, contractors and builders in government, telecommunications, gas, transport, viticulture and retail projects. His clients have included Abacus Property Group, Woolworths Group, ALDI, VicRoads, the Department of Education and the Department of Transport.

Michael is the third major lateral hire in Melbourne by Moray & Agnew in the last three months.

Bill Papastergiadis, Moray & Agnew’s Melbourne Managing Partner said: “We have one of the leading construction practices in Victoria. Michael’s appointment as head of our property team is part of our plan to offer our clients the best property and construction teams in Victoria. We are well on the way to doing just that.”

Commenting on his appointment, Michael Markowitz says: “I am very excited to join Moray & Agnew. The firm has an enviable reputation as one of the fastest growing national mid-tier firms in Australia. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to take a lead role and strengthen the Melbourne property practice by adding significant development and project services for its clients.”

Moray & Agnew’s National Managing Partner, Michael Pitt, comments: “The last 12 months has seen record growth for our Melbourne office. We increased lawyer head count by 51%. Our Melbourne office is approaching 100-strong and fast becoming a significant force in Victoria.”
